Youngster ‘maimed’ by vandalised fence in horror accident

Fraser Thomson (11) injured his lower abdomen when he collided with the vandalised wire fence at the Huntershill complex in Bishopbriggs.

The St Helen’s Primary School pupil plays for Rossvale Boys’ Club 2000s.

Fraser’s dad, Victor, said: “He went for a tackle and was injured by a piece of broken fence when he ran behind the goal.

“The fencing has been broken for weeks and there are bits sticking out.

“Fraser was in extreme pain and he has not been able to play football since.”

Victor added: “I am very angry about this. The council was informed several times about this problem and nothing was done to address it.

“Rossvale have a great number of teams using this facility, from five-year-olds to young adults.

“My worry is that the metal wires sticking out could blind someone or even worse, if this is not repaired as soon as possible.

“This is very dangerous for all the children who use these facilities.”

Mark Grant, general manager of East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust, said: “There is a maintenance regime in place for the pitches.

“We are aware of the problems with the fence and floodlight and had already ordered a new panel for the fence.”

The new fence panel was due to be fitted on Monday, of this week (April 30).

Mark Grant added: “Repairing the floodlight requires the use of specialist equipment and we expect this work to be completed mid May. In addition, we have ordered the synthetic surface of the pitch to be cleaned due to contamination from ash being washed onto it and have requested the drainage issue is rectified to prevent further contamination.”
