Numerous Met Office weather warnings for rain and wind are currently in place, with the UK forecast to see unsettled conditions in some parts over the next few days.

The Met Office forecast for Tuesday (23 Feb) says wet and windy weather will move east across northern areas, “with heavy rain and severe gales in places.”

However, further south and east, it will be drier, brighter, and locally very mild.

Tuesday evening will see rain and strong winds continuing across many northern and western areas, but it will remain dry and mild in the southeast.

On Wednesday (24 Feb), there will be a “band of rain moving slowly southeast across central and western areas. Dry elsewhere with scattered showers in the far northwest,” adds the Met Office.

However, the Met Office outlook for Thursday (25 Feb) to Saturday (27 Feb) forecasts “Rain clearing the southeast on Thursday with sunny spells and a few showers elsewhere.

“Some rain in the northwest, otherwise turning increasingly settled from Friday. Mild though overnight frosts likely.”

What weather warnings are currently in place?

A Met Office yellow warning for wind is in place until 6pm on Tuesday, covering Central, Tayside & Fife, East Midlands, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, North East England, North West England, Northern Ireland, Orkney & Shetland, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Wales and Yorkshire & Humber.

The warning said: “Strong south to south-westerly winds will gust 50-60 mph at times, but there is the potential for gusts of 70 mph for eastern coastal districts of Northern Ireland, the Western Isles, across the Pennines, north Wales and perhaps the Moray coast during the morning.”

A yellow warning for rain is also in place until 23.59pm on Tuesday for Northern Ireland, with another is place until 7am on Wednesday for North West England, and a third in place until 6pm on Wednesday, covering Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, and Strathclyde.

An amber warning for rain is also in place until 12pm on Wednesday, covering Central, Tayside & Fife, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde.

What to expect from this amber warning:

  • Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life
  • A good chance some communities cut off by flooded roads
  • Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
  • Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
