Snow go for Juniors fixtures

Kilsyth Rangers and Cumbernauld United were not amongst the lucky ones as the central belt endured a freak snow storm in the middle of March.

It was all the more frustrating for Rangers - they were geared up for a top of the table clash with St Anthony’s in Cardonald, knowing a win would put them level on points at the summit.

Assistant manager Martin Mooney said: “It was disappointing, when you’ve prepared for a big game you just want to play. Especially now the fact that the game doesn’t get pushed back to next weekend because of the Central League Cup, so we don’t really know when we’ll play it.”

Cumbernauld United boss Danny Drew says his team were all the more disappointed that their trip to face Renfrew at Western Park was postponed due to their own poor recent form.

He said: “We were absolutely gutted. I felt in training through the week, after losing to East Kilbride, the boys were all up and determined.

“We had high hopes for the game, we felt we could get back on track with a win, so it was frustrating for the weather to get in the way.”

This weekend sees the start of the Central League Cup, with both Kilsyth and Cumbernauld facing tough ties against Super League Premier opposition. Rangers are away to Lanark United while Arthurlie head to Guy’s Meadow.

Mooney added: “We seem to do well against the bigger teams. I played against them a couple of seasons ago and it’s a nice park, but it’s quite open to the wind.

“The league remains our priority but playing in a different competition gives the players a bit of a change of pace.”

Drew said: “We’re looking forward to having a good crowd there for a big team visiting and it’ll give the players a chance to show what they’re made of. These games hopefully take care of themselves and the boys will get a lift from it.”
