In 1996, the UK was at peak Britpop - if you didn’t swagger like a Gallagher then what were you doing? But in Glasgow, things were a bit different. The year spawned some of the city’s best ever bands and albums. There were debuts from bands that would go on to take on near mythical status in the city - and better yet, many of them are still going strong.
We take a look back 30 years to see what was happening on the Glasgow music scene, including a visit from one band who, much like Glasgow, refused to conform to the norms.
Take a look at six great music moments from 1996.

1. Belle and Sebastian emerge
Belle and Sebastian can account for two of the great Glasgow moments of 1996. They released their first album Tigermilk via Stow College's Electric Honey label and then just a few months later followed it up with the incredible If You're Feeling Sinister. | Getty Images

2. Bis play Top of the Pops
Top of the Pops has seen some great Glasgow bands, but 1996 saw Bis become the first ever unsigned band to appear on the legendary music show. | Getty Images

3. Arab Strap release The Weekend Never Starts Round Here
November of 1996 and one of my personal favourite albums was released. The Weekend Never Starts Round Here was wildly different to anything else that was happening in a country in the throes of Britpop Photo: John Devlin

4. Mogwai release their first single
Mogwai have taken on legendary status in Scottish music and they truly launched themselves on to the scene in 1996 with the release of "Tuner"/"Lower" and then "Summer", which would go on to become NME's Single of the Week. Photo: Contributed
