Cowan joined the Braidholm side after meeting James Eddie at a training camp in New Zealand. The number nine has also featured a number of times for the Otago Highlanders in super rugby and is the brother of Jimmy Cowan, who has 45 caps for the All Blacks.

The match was the first pro rugby game to be played in Canterbury since the Earthquake earlier this year.

Rangi Jericevich — who played with Cowan during his time in Glasgow- said: “It’s fantastic to see how Scott’s career has progressed over the past few seasons as he has stepped out of the shadow of his brother Jimmy and has developed into a top class scrum half.

“When he played for GHA but he was a a real handful for our Premier one opposition at the time.

“He was a key member of our squad that year as we retained our position in Premier One”.

His friend and former team mate James Eddie was at Murrayfield this week as he launched the new Scotland sevens squad - of which both he and former GHA winger Rory Hughes - will play a part.

Meanwhile, Cartha Queen’s Park have launched a petition in protest of next year’s meaningless premier three season 2011/12 season.

All SRU member clubs received a copy on Tuesday night.

The petition states: “We feel that the attendees of the agm were not fully aware of the implication that there would be no promotion or relegation from Premier three”.

Last month’s league restructuring means that both Cartha and GHA will be stuck in Premier three for at least the next two years.
