A toast to Lanark Thistle Bowling Club

ONE of the few things in Lanark more historic than the Thistle Bowling Club is the very hill it has sat on for 250 years.

You might say that Castlehill is a far more tranquil place than it used to be, the soft clack of bowling balls making contact replacing the metallic clang of claymore on broadsword, the soft tread of sensible shoes on the green replacing the unstoppable march of William Wallace and his warriors.

Few will regret that the one-time site of Lanark Castle, the bloody cradle of the Scottish Wars of Independence in 1297, is now very much a place of peaceful pursuits – even when members occasionally hotly

dispute the lie of a ball.
