Admiration for blind horse rider Milena Canning

THE organiser of Clydesdale Riding for the Disabled has been telling Gazette Sport the remarkable story of a blind lady who rides horses.

Maggie Fitzgerald, of Douglas Water, can't believe the talents of star pupil Milena Canning, who rides at Stanmore Stables in Lanark on most Wednesday afternoons.

"Milena has half hour sessions with our instructor Jackie McAteer of Nemphlar," Maggie said.

"It is a huge achievement for Milena to be able to ride. It is amazing what she achieves.

"Milena has been doing this for three years now and has made an unbelievable improvement.

"I've seen her reach up to cantering speed, which for a blind person is quite incredible."
