Alan Cardwell helped beat his own Ironman record!

LANARK Triathlon Club head coach Alan Cardwell has revealed that he had a major hand in his Ironman club record being smashed by a mammoth 24 minutes – because he coached the man who broke it!

Alan (46), watched in amazement as Coalburn man Derek Burnside (also 46), completed a 3800m swim, 160km bike ride and 42km marathon in just 10hrs 22mins at the gruelling Barcelona Challenge.

Alan said: “Derek knocked an hour off his previous personal best, which was absolutely incredible.

“I think he was able to do that because he got himself a new coach – me!”

Team-mate Richard ‘Titch’ Frame also merited a mention as he went under 11 hours in Barcelona for a personal best in just his second Ironman event.
