Always look on the bright side, whistles Rabs boss Lindsay

Petershill – last season’s Premier League runners-up – were Rabs’ first opponents of the 2012/13 league season – running out 1-0 winners after poor defending gifted them the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute.

But the Kirkintilloch club’s manager was delighted at the way his new-look team rallied in the second half. Quality goalkeeping and the woodwork conspired to prevent an equaliser being scored from a host of well-created chances.

Lindsay told the Herald: “It was a wee bit disappointing to give away the goal in the first half, but we looked good otherwise.

“The team’s fitness kicked in during the second half and we certainly deserved a point. We could even have nicked a win if we’d had a bit of luck.

“Without a doubt it’s a promising performance and if we can carry that determination though the season we’ll do well.”

He added: “It’s a hard league and every team is capable of beating every other team. We’ve set the bar to finish higher than last season, concede less goals and win more home games.”

Rabs will now be looking to take home their first points of the season against Ashfield at Adamslie Park on Saturday.

Lindsay said: “It will be another tough game as they got a good result at Arthurlie at the weekend and beat us 5-3 last time we played them in the league. We really want to get our first points as quickly as possible though and I’m hopeful we can get the win.”

The game against Ashfield kicks-off at 2pm.

Meanwhile, Bishopbriggs side Rossvale FC drew 3-3 away to Vale of Clyde as they kicked off their campaign in the Second Division.

Manager Ian Gray would have settled for a point before the game, but was disappointed not to win as Rossvale were 2-0 up at half-time.

He said: “They got a penalty for nothing when it was 2-0 with 25 minutes to go.

“It was 3-2 with a minute to go and they equalised. On the balance of play they more than deserved the draw, but to be 2-0 up with 25 minutes to play . . . it’s a bit disappointing.”

But he added: “These games in our league away from home are just kicking matches. There’s no pretty football played. They’re just battles. This game last season we would have lost 6-0, so it’s a good bit of progress made.”

Gray pointed out that only three players were in the team who played at the start of last season, with many shipped out to improve the quality.
