As good as gold

GIFFNOCK North AAC emerged from the mud of Gourock last Sunday, glittering with gold, silver and bronze medals from the annual Renfrewshire Cross Country Championships.

Over various twisting courses, the southside club delivered prize-winning performances in every junior age group, along with a fine bronze individual medal from senior Greg Turner, who had won silver in the Ayrshire championships the day before.

Giffnock’s under 17 girls swept to a coveted one, two, three from Nicole Scott, Rebecca Saxby and Rachel Saxon over three miles. Asked about the course afterwards, Saxby replied: “No comment”.

Flying the lone flag for his club’s u17 men over the same gruelling route was Ross Gray who put in a gritty sub 19 minute effort for eighth.

Erin Wallace surged decisively halfway into her race and simply powered away to u15 gold after another hard uphill mile, to lead Danielle Kelly (3rd) and Sarah Eunson (5th) to the team crown, all ably backed by Rebekah Hemingsley. Never ones to be outshone, the u15 boys Michael Lowrie (3rd), Joseph Lowrie (5th) and Oliver Watson-Sweeney (7th) claimed their own team crown, with Jamie Sturrock in close support.

In the u13s two mile race, Giffnock’s girls struck silver behind Inverclyde AC, with Emily Crusher (2nd), Emma Lawton (3rd) and Clare Wallace (8th) to the fore.
