Auchengray man Adam Letham completes 44 years in Africa

AUCHENGRAY man Adam Letham (65) recently completed an incredible African assignment spanning a total of 44 years, during which he taught maths and coached some of Botswana's most successful athletes including Glody Dube, Justice Dipeba and Malebogo Mogano.

The former Law and District AAC marathon runner bade farewell at the National Sports Council's affiliates complex in Botswana, bringing to an end almost two decades of living, teaching and coaching in that country.

His brother John (66), of Tarbrax, said: "I'm very proud of Adam's achievements. He remains very modest about everything he has done.

"But his coaching accomplishments are incredible, especially when you consider that he has no coaching qualifications.

"We write weekly, because I don't have email. He emails my sister Marion in England instead.

"I've not seen John for four years. These days I think he is more bald, heavy and tanned than during his youth! He still runs regularly."

Adam's proudest moment as a coach came when Dube finished seventh in the 800m final at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
