Bowler mourned

Dougie, who was a keen sportsman from childhood, became Carluke club champ at the tender age of 15.

While doing his Royal Air Force national service, Dougie captained the RAF Egypt football team – which included 10 professional players – to a 3-0 win over the Egyptian national side.

Dougie earned a trial with English side QPR after leaving the RAF but ended up going back to work in his parents’ haulage business.

He married local lass Pearl Thomson in 1962 and only this year they celebrated their Golden Wedding. They raised two sons, Gordon and Stuart, and have four grandchildren whom Dougie adored.

He won numerous bowling titles, memorably excelling at a international game in Rugby when he single-handedly destroyed the English team.

Dougie was also a curler who twice reached the British Open final.

He became Carluke BC president in 1962 and to honour his sporting achievements all over the world he was made the club’s honnorary male president.

Dougie’s funeral took place on Thursday, October 25 with a memorial service at St Andrew’s Church conducted by Rev Helen Jamieson and attended by bowlers and associates from far afield. They continued to Daldowie Crematorium. Donations of £460 given in memory of Douglas will be donated to CHAS Children’s Hospice Association.
