Derek chalks up fifty not out

KILSYTH Golden Gloves boxer Derek Skinner ensured his half-century bout was not a disappointment with a superb victory on the the bill topper at Airdrie’s Tudor Hotel despite having only an hour’s notice for the contest.

Derek answered an SOS from the organisers of the charity gala event which also saw him give away 4kg to Four Isles welterweight and former Scottish Champion Paddy McGowan. The contest itself was a hard-fought slug-fest which had a packed crowd on their feet and it was the last punch of the battle which sealed the win.

Speaking shortly after the final bell, coach John Heaney heaped praise on his charge in what was a career defining moment.

Also in action were Ryaan Cassidy who let a two-round lead slip from his clutches as he tired at the end of a cagey tryst, and young boxer of the year Lee Ferns, who powered to a fantastic win over Clydebank’s Robert Harkin.

“It’s been particularly difficult getting opposition for Lee due to his fearsome reputation so we had to give away age and weight for this contest and Lee rose to that challenge to take a very good scalp,” said a club spokesman.

All three boxers will join the rest of the Kilsyth stable in action at the club’s home show at Kilsyth Academy on April 15.
