Gold for boxers

BROADWOOD Boxing Club had three boys in action at the recent Scottish Novice Championships.

Callum Docherty, Bryan Ferrie and Daniel Sweeney, who are all aged 13-14 and hail from Cumbernauld, were among the hundreds of young boxers taking part in the competition at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, with Callum and Brian bringing home gold medals.

Club secretary Sean Duggan said: “All the boys in the championship have had seven or less previous fights. There were over 50 clubs represented, so there were hundreds of fights over the course of the tournament.”

Callum Docherty is the son of former British bantamweight champion Drew, who hails from Condorrat and Sean feels Callum has inherited his father’s talent. “He has had six previous bouts and won five of them so he’s doing very well. Bryan also has two wins from two fights and Daniel has one win in three.”

Broadwood boxers are currently training hard for February’s intermediate championships, also being held in Ravenscraig, and Callum will be following his novice success with his debut at this event.
