Mailman aims to take delivery of Celtic title

He’s been famously hanging a gold medal around his neck since being crowned the 2014 Commonwealth Games lightweight champ.

But that was two years ago and the Newarthill fighter is keen to add to his collection of bling.

It looks like he’ll get the chance to do just that shortly, with Flynn expected to fight for a domestic belt when he appears on the Ricky Burns undercard at the Hydro in May.

The former postie, affectionately known as ‘The Mailman’, took his professional record to a perfect seven from seven by outpointing Jordan Ellison live on TV at the Thistle Hotel over the weekend.

And that’s opened up the chance for a crack at a title against an unnamed opponent.

Flynn said : “I’m speaking with Eddie Hearn (boxing promoter) just now and it looks as if my fight at the Hydro will be for the Celtic title.

“It’s vacant at the moment but something I’m really, really looking forward to.”

Flynn’s win over Ellison, a boxer whose own record indicated a slight step up in class for the local lightweight, has opened up the door to a crack at the Celtic title.

It was not only a successful night in the ring for Flynn, but also an evening of success in another regard, with the fight shown live on STV.

“It’s been a long, long time since we’ve had anything like that on Scottish TV,” he said.

“It was massive for the sport in Scotland and the feedback I’ve had from it has all been really positive.

“People really want to see these fights on television.

“On the night I felt my performance was ok but I know I can step it up.

“The boy came with a good record and came to fight so it was important to get the win.

“But the way I’m feeling now, I’m fit and capable enough of going 10 rounds.”

Flynn’s next fight will be at the Hydro where Scotland’s Ricky Burns will aim to become a three weight world champion by beating Michele Di Rocco for the vacant WBA World Super-Lightweight title.
