Bully Wee looking to move to East Kilbride

CLYDE Football Club have announced an interest in moving to East Kilbride.

A statement on the club website identified the Showpark football ground as a possible new home for the Bully Wee, who have been based at Cumbernauld’s Broadwood Stadium since 1994. It opens: “Clyde Football Club can announce that it is in discussions with East Kilbride Thistle regarding a potential opportunity to develop a community focused stadium at the Showpark in East Kilbride.

To this end, the club has begun to work through the process with the aim to develop a sports complex at the site which will be able to host an SFL compliant stadium and other sporting activities within a community facility in the heart of East Kilbride.”

In December 2010 the club announced an interest in exiting Broadwood. The club had earlier been threatened with eviction due to rent arrears by North Lanarkshire Council.

As reported in the News, Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Jamie Hepburn, recently met with Mr. Alexander to discuss the club’s situation. He commented:

“It is disappointing that Clyde feel that they have to consider a move away from Cumbernauld to East Kilbride. The board at the football club are understandably looking out for the interest of their own long-term future, but it will be a blow to the Cumbernauld area to lose its senior team.

“The statement issued by Clyde makes clear that there preferences have been to seek a location for their own ground somewhere in Cumbernauld, and that tallies with what the club Chairman John Alexander told me when we met.

“However, for whatever reason it seems that there have been difficulties in identifying such a site in the Cumbernauld area. Following my meeting with John Alexander, I wrote to North Lanarkshire Council to request that they do all they can to help Clyde stay in Cumbernauld. In light of the club’s statement, it is imperative that they respond quickly to my request, lest the town lose its one and only senior football club.”
