City are through!

Glasgow City topped group eight in the first round of the UEFA Women’s champions league after drawing 1-1 with Finnish Champions PK-35 Vantaa.

Now, Scotland’s top ladies side progress through to the last 32 knock-out stages.

Jane Ross got City off to a perfect start scoring after only four minutes after a great ball from Eilish McSorley and the City and Scotland forward collected the ball brilliantly before lobbing it over the outrushing keeper.

Against the run of play PK-35 equalised beating the offside trap to race through on the City goal unopposed and Nigerian striker Cynthia Uwak rounded Claire Johnstone in the City nets to score with ease.

City passed up the chance to go in front again as Leanne Ross saw her penalty saved after Christie Murray was brought down in the box as she rounded the goalkeeper, which saw the PK-35 number 1 receive a yellow card for her troubles.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the game finished 1-1, which in the end was all City needed as they finished top of the Group on goal difference and now progress to Europe’s elite knock-out stages for the record breaking second year running.

City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “We are delighted to be in the next round.

“This was our objective and we have achieved it.

“I knew with 10 minutes to go a draw would see us through, but we were determined to remain true to our philosophy and we continued to push forward to win the match”.
