Clyde share spoils with Warriors

Jim Duffy fielded a side captained by new signing Paul Hay which included a number of faces which will be unfamiliar to most, for the moment at least.

Both goals came in the second half with Stewart Kean heading the home side ahead on the hour mark before trialist Steph McDonald combined well with Jordan Fitzpatrick to rifle the ball home from outside the box.

Recent weeks have seen a number of new players pen deals at Broadwood for the coming season, starting with the man who was between the sticks at Ochilview on Saturday, Felip Mentel (21).

The Slovakian goalkeeper joined on loan from Dundee United and has represented his country at under-19 and under-21 level.

Mentel joined The Tangerines from Manchester City last summer and is highly regarded by Tannadice boss Peter Houston.

Duffy said of the move on the club’s website: “To have a player with his background and from a club with the pedigree of Dundee United is a tremendous boost as we build for the season ahead.

“Felip will contest with JC (Hutchison) for the number one jersey and that is important as we need competition for places throughout the squad.”

Meanwhile, a number of other players have also recently joined The Bully Wee.

Kris Irvine (19), a right-back who was formerly with Dundee United has signed, as has Ryan Kane (20), a former Morton midfielder, who has shown an ability to take players on and deliver well into the box.

Ex-East Stirling and Queen’s Park utility player John Neil (24) and last season’s loan signing Pat Scullion have both also agreed terms for the new season.

A few eyebrows will be raised by the club’s new left back, Lee Sharp, a man known by many as the coach of the Clyde under-19s.

The 36-year-old will feature as Duffy attempts to add experience to his young squad.

A further addition was made on Monday evening as 21-year-old Steph McDonald, who scored as a trialist against Stenny, put pen to paper for the coming season.

Former Hamilton Academical defender, Brian McQueen (20), is also expected to agree terms in the coming days.

The Challenge Cup kicks-off on Saturday with Clyde hosting Berwick Rangers at Broadwood.

The following weekend sees the start of the League Cup, away to Brechin City, before Peterhead visit Cumbernauld for the start of the new league campaign on August 6.
