Clydesdale badminton stars claim Scottish title

WITH a squad containing four of the top eight under-16 badminton players in Scotland, it was perhaps no surprise that Team Lanarkshire won the Scottish Inter Area Championships at Glasgow’s Cockburn Centre.

The triumph – which saw Lanarkshire claim the title for the first time in 10 years – saw them win five games out of five against opposition from various parts of Scotland including the Borders, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

They were helped by the sterling efforts of 15-year-old Carluke High School pupils Jordan Philip, of East Avenue, Carluke and Forth’s Alistair Orr.

The Lanarkshire team was coached by Ross MacLeod and Jordan’s dad Colin Philip (59), who said: “The boys squad is definitely the best we’ve had since 2002.

“A lot of teams turn up for competitions with a couple of good boys and girls but with a weaker third and fourth string.

“But our team can take care of itself at every level.

“Winning all five games was a fantastic achievement. We couldn’t have asked for any better.”
