Colts reach season’s halfway point in fine form

The Colts final match before the mid season break saw them host Hearts, hoping to continue their undefeated league home record and keep them in contention at the top of the league.

Any thoughts that the visitors would be bit part players in this match lasted around 60 seconds. A ball played into the feet of player manager McSherry in midfield seemed harmless, but centre half Cassidy came through the back and a foul was given.

McSherry required treatment to her lower back following the challenge, and she only lasted a further 20 minutes before coming off due to the injury.

The first half was not pretty for the hosts and they went into the break 1-0 down, the goal coming from a needlessly conceded corner by the Colts backline. Coral Cassidy was on the end of the corner heading past Roe on 31 minutes.

The Colts upped their performance and turned in a second 45 minutes that was up to expectations of how they can play.

Five minutes after the interval, a Ruth Young free kick had Donoghue looking on helpless as it struck her right hand post.

And the hosts were back on level terms two minutes later. Fern ran on to a McIntyre through ball and placed the ball skilfully past Donoghue.

The Colts had their tails up and went close again on several occasions looking for a winning goal.

Hearts almost stole the match with 12 minutes left. A free kick was conceded 25 yards from their goal. A stunning strike came off the bar and struck Roe on the back, but, fortunately for the Colts, the rebound was cleared for a corner.

Despite having most of the possession and chances in the second half a draw was a fair result.

After the match McSherry praised her squad. Not only for their second half showing, but also for the way they performed in the first half of this season.

She said: “The draw against Hearts saw them get the point that equals last season’s total in half the games. We’re now set up to press on when the second half of the season commences and hopefully achieve something special.”

Rebecca Young was awarded the MoTM for the hosts and Kirsten Reilly was MoTM for the visitors.

The Colts’ next match is away to Kilmarnock on August 4 with a 2pm kick off.
