Cumbernauld lads play the beautiful game in aid of leading children's charity

SCOTLAND may not have made it to this year's World Cup, but football fever was widespread on Saturday, June 5 when the NSPCC's annual ChildLine World Footie tournament kicked off at Powerleague in Glasgow.

A five-a-side team from Cumbernauld were in the running to lift the coveted trophy at the hotly contested World Footie tournament – Scotland's largest charity football event. The lads – workmates at HM Revenue & Customs in Cumbernauld – represented Portugal in this year's competition.

Team captain John Dempster said: ""It's great to be associated again with the ChildLine World Footie tournament. We've played in it every year and we always thoroughly enjoy the day. We've raised 1000 again this year for the NSPCC's ChildLine service which is great. It's such a worthy cause and we're thrilled to take part and show our support each year."

This year the popular five-a-side tournament, held in association with Powerleague, saw 18 teams competing for the top honour of World Footie champions. In the end it was a team from Kilmarnock – representing Mexico – who had the stamina and the talent to lift the seventh annual World Footie trophy. The team beat Ghana in the final, with Germany coming in third place.

NSPCC corporate fundraising manager, Samantha Bagg added: "The NSPCC's ChildLine World Footie is the largest charity football tournament in Scotland. The teams that signed up had a fantastic day of football and so far their efforts have raised a brilliant 15,000. We'd like to thank everyone who supported the event, whether they were cheering from the sidelines, donating prizes or buying raffle tickets.
