Cumbernauld rugby seniors’ season ends on a high note

AFTER this winter’s poor weather, the 2012/13 senior rugby season has now come to an end, and what a way to finish it off for Cumbernauld, with a couple of derby games
against Lenzie.

It kicked off with a Challenge Match between the Clubs 2nd XVs, which saw Cumbernauld coming out victors 15-7, with tries for Coull and Rush, and two successful kicks for Morrison.

The 1st xv game saw Lenzie needing at least a draw to secure promotion, whilst Cumbernauld could not improve on their mid-table position. Lenzie fired out of the blocks with a try in the first couple of minutes, but with the wind at their backs, Cumbernauld dominated territory for the remainder of the half, but their only points on the board came from a penalty from Reid, against a couple of additional penalties to Lenzie to give a half time score of 11-3 to Lenzie.

With the wind advantage in the second half, Lenzie would have expected to run away with this game, but Cumbernauld matched them in most departments, with a strong display in the forwards and excellent defence in midfield which meant Lenzie struggled to get their energetic wingers involved in the game. Despite the toing and froing, the only scores in the half were a try a piece giving a final score of 16-8, which was enough to see Lenzie promoted. Cumbernauld find themselves a mid table seventh, and can look forward to another competitive season next time around.
