Danny Drew departs

CUMBERNAULD United were without a manager for Saturday’s game at Kilwinning Rangers after caretaker boss Danny Drew was sacked last Wednesday evening.

The dismissal came just days after Drew had led the team to a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over giants Arthurlie in the Central League Cup.

Drew said: “I had a one minute phone call and they just said to me it wasn’t working out. I think they wanted someone to come in and just hold the fort and not make changes. But that’s not me, I wanted to put my own stamp on it.”

Drew’s first game in charge was a 3-2 win over Ashfield on February 5 after manager John Queen decided to take a sabbatical from the job.

Ronnie Hunter, joint chief executive of Cumbernauld United, said: “Danny was as keen as mustard. However, perhaps he was just too keen and wanted to make too many changes.

“It was always going to be a temporary position and it just wasn’t working out. It was better taking the step sooner than later.”

Hunter confirmed that no-one has yet been appointed, but added: “Within the next week we’ll know better what we are doing.”
