Death of United stalwart

ALL at Guy’s Meadow were shocked to hear of the death of Cumbernauld United stalwart Jerry Gatens who passed away at Monklands Hospital on Saturday aged 73.

Jerry became associated with United in the early 1970’s and over the years gave great service to the club he loved. He held various positions on United’s committee, eventually reaching the office of president.

According to another United stalwart, Jimmy McIntosh, Jerry was a tireless worker who would do anything, and everything, for the Cumbernauld team.

Jerry (pictured right at Guy’s Meadow in the 1980s) was a well known and popular figure in Junior circles representing United as a delegate to the Central Region where he also served on various committees. He was always assured of a warm welcome at other Junior grounds.

Until his recent ill health, Jerry was a regular member of the United Original Supporters Club. He also contributed match reports to the Cumbernauld News.

Everyone at Cumbernauld United, officials, players and supporters, send their condolences to Jerry’s wife Rena, and his family. He will be sorely missed.

Jerry’s funeral will take place this Friday (March 23) at St. Joseph’s Church, South Carbrain, and thereafter at Daldowie Crematorium.
