Derek Brown is double Sports Personality winner

AN emotional Derek 'Tiddler' Brown landed two awards at Friday night's Clydesdale Sports Council Sports Personality of the Year Awards in the Cartland Bridge Hotel, Lanark.

Tiddler, the Lanark United general manager, was proud to receive the Senior Team award from Brooks manager Alistair Brooks, on behalf of a United squad which last year gained promotion to junior football's Premier Superleague.

He told compere Brian Donald, of BBC Sport: ''United struggled badly at the start of the season financially, but we got ourselves together.

''We have good sponsorship from everyone in Lanark, even the small businesses. It is a community effort.

''We lost our committee member Duncan Elder last week. This award is for him.''

The evening was later rounded off in fantastic style when Derek — believed to be the only man to play for and manage Lanark United, Lesmahagow Juniors, Carluke Rovers AND Forth Wanderers — received a Service to Sport accolade.

This was just reward for an incredible career which included Tiddler leading Lesmahagow Juniors to the Reebok Central League Championship in season 1991-'92, thanks to a dramatic final day 4-3 win over Pollok.

And only last season, he managed Lanark United into the West of Scotland Super League Premier Division thanks to a 3-2 aggregate play-off victory over Glenafton, after being appointed on a

temporary basis following the shock resignation of Tony McInally to take over at Shotts.
