Fiona Trainer's in fighting form!

A THIRTY-five-year-old mother of two from Kirkfieldbank is trying to pulverise her opponents in the taekwon-do ring!

Carluke Scotia TKD member Fiona Trainer, a secondary school drama teacher, is almost double the age of most of her young team-mates in the Scotland women's taekwon-do squad.

Fiona, who took up the Korean martial art just six months after the birth of second daughter Alison in 2004, now weighs a slim and muscle-bound 58kg thanks to her regular taekwon-do sessions under the tuition of David Condie at Scotia TKD gym in Carluke.

"Doing taekwon-do has physically rebuilt my body," Fiona said. "I took it up purely to get fit after my daughter was born.

"So to have represented Scotland at taekwon-do three times in my 30s has been absolutely brilliant.

"Other than the Scotland ladies captain Donna Bryce, who is 30, the rest of the squad are either teenagers or in their early 20s.

"Although I've not won a fight yet, I'm pleased not to have had my face put in!"

Fiona's taekwon-do highlight was undoubtedly winning sparring gold in Stratford at the 2009 British Championships.

She recently won a sparring bronze medal at the GTUK British Championships in Coventry.

Also excelling there were Fiona's Scotia team-mates Gregor Towers and Lewis Walker. Braidwood Primary pupil Gregor (10) and Lanark Grammar student Lewis (12), of Carstairs, both achieved sparring golds.
