Campsie on cloud 9 thanks to dazzling goal blitz

Blackies again had to move the game from Station Road because of weather. The venue this time was Merkland astro grass. Watch went 1-0 ahead in the 10th minute, with Steven Aitken taking a defence-splitting pass from Declan Cairney to beat keeper Dougan from 12 yards.

An important goal for Watch in the 39th minute looked as if it could seal a narrow victory in what was now becoming a classic between two talented sides.

A corner from Prentice on the left found McGeough at the near post, who played the ball back to Prentice. The wing-back’s ball across the face of the goal fell to central defender Donnelly at the back post, who put the ball into the net.

In the 44th minute United made it 2-1. After clever play from Elliot the ball was played through to McCluskey who blasted past Storey.

The second half started with United now posing a real threat, but Watch brilliantly scored three goals in three minutes.

In the 54th minute a pass from O’Connor found Aitken and he clinically beat keeper Dougan from 15 yards.

One minute later Watt sent the ball down the right for McIlroy, who beat full-back Young and walloped the ball into the net.

The onslaught continued – from a Meechan pass Prentice went on a brilliant run on the left. His cross-field pass picked out McIlroy, who once again netted to make it 5-1.

This had to be seen to be believed – in three minutes the Watch players had completely demoralised United.

McIlroy completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute. A Donnelly pass sent Aitken away on the left and the striker’s ball across goal saw McIlroy again react quickest and score number six.

Four minutes later Aitken completed his hat-trick. By now McIlroy and Aitken could not be stopped. Displaying incredible finishing the Campsie striker made it 7-1.

McCluskey was back on the score sheet when he netted a superb goal from 20 yards in the 78th minute.

Not to be outdone McIlroy scored his fourth goal in the last minute after clever play from Logan and Aitken.

Black Watch players in every department of the team are to be congratulated for outstanding quality in a game with little between two fine teams.

Watch are due to play Baillieston in the West of Scotland Cup at Station Road on Saturday with a 2pm kick-off.

Tote numbers for Saturday were 7 and 10. There were two winners, receiving £150 each.
