The Irishman is yet to make any additions to a side that won a Premiership and Scottish Cup double last season. There are glaring areas that need bolstered though, including the keeper department, where number one Joe Hart has retired while deputy Benjamin Siegrist could also leave.

Adam Idah is one player Rodgers would like to bring back after the forward impressed on loan from Norwich City last season. New Canaries head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup may want a look at him in pre-season though, while a star midfielder in Matt O’Riley is attracting interest.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Sutton has assessed Celtic’s business, calling on the need for a keeper and striker, while highlighting the importance of keeping O’Riley. He said: “I don’t think last summer’s transfer window was particularly good.

“But after Christmas Celtic really got going. There is still a lot of work for Celtic to do over the summer, obviously Joe Hart is gone, Adam Idah has gone back to Norwich, he really impressed. He’s got to go goalkeeper, Joe Hart was brilliant for three seasons.

“He will be a big miss. That centre forward position, not everybody was sure about Adam Idah but he performed really well. I’d be surprised if Celtic weren’t trying to get a deal over the line with Norwich City but the way he performed, I can imagine with their new manager, he will want to keep him.

“They certainly need strengthening in that centre forward position and the other thing is holding onto Matt O’Riley. If Celtic want to do well domestically and have a go in Europe, they have to keep their best players.”
