Celtic and Rangers transfer target keeps future options open as Premiership rival club prepare for summer raid

The Motherwell striker is set to be a sought after asset in the summer

Motherwell revelation Tawanda Maswanhise is keeping his options open in the summer in what could be a promising sign for both Celtic and Rangers.

The 23-year old currently tops the league’s goalscoring charts and has been nominated for the Player of the Year award. Maswanhise has been the focal point of a Motherwell team that have been one of the league’s surprise packages. He signed for the Lanarkshire side from Leicester City in August 2024, but before this season, was a relative unknown.

The Zimbabwe international caught the attention of Celtic and Rangers in his breakout campaign with both clubs monitoring his progress during the winter window. However, Steelmen boss Jens Berthel Askou had no desire to sell him with his side still pushing for the European places. Given the success of his team this season, he may well need to prepare for several bids in the summer. The Well currently sit fourth in the Premiership table and after last weekend’s 3-2 victory at Ibrox, look well on their way for a European tour next season.

Maswanhise on what the future holds

Speaking at the Player of the Year awards, where he was nominated alongside teammate Elijah Just and Hearts duo Claudio Braga and Lawrence Shankland, Maswanhise is excited to see what the future holds. He told the Daily Record: “If a team wants you, you’ve just got to show them why they want you, but that shouldn’t be the main focus.

“You’ve just got to keep working then when the summertime’s here, off season, you can really look at your options and stuff. I always think about my future. I love my future because it’s exciting. With the achievements I’ve had this year, there’s more on the table for me, so we’ll see. Who knows what will happen in the future. I’ll probably speak to my agent in the next few weeks. Not long until the season ends now.”

Askou’s future could decide Maswanhise’s

Danish boss Askou has been the mastermind behind Motherwell’s footballing revolution this season. Their exploits have seen him too linked with a move elsewhere, namely Celtic, as Martin O’Neill is set to leave the club at the end of the season. If Askou was to make the Parkhead switch, it wouldn’t be crazy to assume that he’d take some of his Motherwell star’s alongside him, including Maswanhise or Just.

Both Celtic and Rangers are set to still be in the market for a striker in the summer. Rangers number nine Youssef Chermiti has started to get among the goals on a more frequent basis in recent weeks, but his missed chance in the dying minutes against Motherwell at the weekend summed up his campaign over the course of the season. Meanwhile, with Celtic set to lose loanees Tomas Cvancara, Junior Adamu and Joel Mvuka at the end of the campaign, they will also need to bolster their attack.
