Celtic eye up Bournemouth ace loan move for problem position as Rangers icon shown exit door by SPFL rival

The latest news stories from both Celtic and Rangers ahead of the January transfer window.

Celtic are considering a £9 million move for a Bournemouth defender, while a former Rangers league title winner is set to leave is current club.

Wilfried Nancy already looks to be getting busy ahead of Thursday’s opening of the January transfer window, as the Hoops boss tries to put his own stamp on the side. During the start of his tenure after he lost his opening four games, his tactics were questioned by Celtic supporters, who believed he was trying to change too much, too soon. However, as the window opening looms he now has a chance to bring in players he believes are right for the system. One of which is a former Barcelona right back, who currently plays his football at AFC Bournemouth.

On the other side of the city, Danny Rohl is set for an equally-hectic transfer window, as the Rangers boss also looks to bring in the personnel to match his style. The Light Blues have already been linked with Wrexham striker, Josh Windass, while Nico Raskin could be headed for the exit door. Another player who looks set for a January move is former Gers midfielder Scott Arfield as his Falkirk career reaches its conclusion. Here’s the latest transfer stories coming out of Celtic Park and Ibrox:

Celtic linked with £9 million Premier League star loan move

According to The Sun, AFC Bournemouth right back, Julian Araujo is set to leave the Vitality Stadium next month, with Celtic keeping a keen eye on proceedings on the south coast. The Mexico International is looking for more game time ahead of a home World Cup, having made just one Cherries appearance all season.

With the injury-burdened Alistair Johnston out until March with a recurring hamstring issue, Nancy is looking to sign Araujo on a short-term basis to give the Hoops an out and out right back, that can play the wing position too. Currently, South Korean winger Yang Hyun-jun is being deployed in this role.

Nancy has some MLS ties to Araujo, who played against him for LA Galaxy when he managed Columbus Crew and Montreal Impact. He also had a loan spell at Las Palmas during his days at Barcelona, before Andoni Iraola snapped him up August 2024.

Arfield set for Falkirk exit

When John McGlynn signed former Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield last in February it looked as if it was the fairytale ending of the Canadian’s career, helping the team where he started reach promotion back to the top flight for the first time in 15 years. However, the 37-year old has struggled for minutes back in the big time.

Sky Sports understands that Arfield is set to leave the club, with the January transfer window just around the corner although whether this is him hanging up his boots, or holding out to find a new club remains to be seen.

Arfield scored nine goals in 13 Scottish Championship appearance last season and was instrumental in them winning the title after going toe-to-toe with Livingston all year. Despite this, during the 2025/26 Premiership campaign, he has started just four out of 19 matches.
