Celtic enter transfer battle with Millwall for 14-goal strike sensation earning rave reviews in Europe

The Hoops are said to be ‘particularly fond’ of the Guadeloupe forward’s attributes

Celtic are reportedly interested in Rodez hitman Tairyk Arconte, who was one of the star players in France’s Ligue 2 this year.

The 22-year-old scored 14 goals and provided three assists in 32 appearances as Rodez reached the promotion play-offs before losing on penalties to Saint-Etienne. Now the club look set to cash in on one of their prized assets this summer, with the Scottish champions understood to be one of a number of teams monitoring the forward’s situation.

It’s claimed that EFL Championship side Millwall and French top-flight club Auxerre are also keeping tabs on the talented marksman, who began his career at Ajaccio before joining Rodez last summer from Pau.

Footmercato claim Celtic are ‘particularly fond’ of Arconte’s explosive profile and that his stock is ‘skyrocketing’ with his current deal running until 2028. Arconte has switched international allegiance to Guadeloupe after representing France at under-19 level.

It’s set to be a busy summer window in Glasgow’s east end with veteran boss Martin O’Neill ready to put his own stamp on the Hoops squad after agreeing a deal to extend his stay in the Parkhead dugout by another year with an option of a further 12 months. Celtic have yet to officially confirm the appointment.

Focus will now shift quickly on revamping the squad, with O’Neill already conceding that star man Daizen Maeda has likely played his last game for the club. Midfielder Reo Hatate has also intimated his desire to move on, while Benjamin Nygren and Arne Engels are also expected to attract interest.

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement due to injury, while a host of loan players have left following the conclusion of the campaign to ensure a hectic summer of recruitment lies ahead for Celtic.

‘Top-heavy’ Celtic squad requires major surgery

O'Neill has made it clear that Celtic’s squad is “top-heavy” and requires significant changes to remain competitive on all fronts next season. A large clear-out is expected, with several fringe players set to follow Luis Palma through the exit door over the coming weeks.
