Celtic identify 'leading target' for new striker this summer as £13m deal could solve 'urgent need'

The marksman has been identified as a potential replacement for Celtic’s talisman

Celtic have reportedly found a replacement for star man Daizen Maeda in the form of 21-year old Elche striker Alvaro Rodriguez.

The Uruguayan, who came through the academy ranks of European giants Real Madrid, notched 12 goal contributions in 34 La Liga appearances last season and has since attracted attention from Dutch sides Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV, as well as the Hoops. He is under contract at Elche until the summer of 2029.

Japanese marksman Maeda came to life at just the right time last season, as his nine goals in Celtic’s last seven helped the club secure the domestic double. As his departure from Parkhead is now ‘likely’ with English Premier League clubs reportedly interested, Rodriguez could be the man to replace his goals - but he’d cost the Celts a pretty penny.

Celtic identify ‘leading’ transfer target

According to TeamTalk: “Celtic are intensifying their search for a new striker this summer as they prepare for the likely departure of key forward Daizen Maeda, and TEAMtalk understands that Alvaro Rodriguez has emerged as a leading target. Japanese international Maeda has expressed ambitions to take the next step in his career, with Premier League interest mounting, leaving the Hoops side in urgent need of a dynamic replacement capable of leading the line in domestic and European competition.”

It’s indicated the striker is worth up to £13m, which would see Rodriguez overtake Arne Engels as Celtic’s most expensive ever signing. However as a 6’ 4”, prolific number nine, whose been praised for his hold up play and ability in the air, he could be the focal point at the top end of the pitch Celtic have lacked in recent years. The Hoops are also looking at Bodo Glimt striker Kasper Hogh as a potential summer addition.

How do you solve a problem like Maeda?

It’s going to be a monumental struggle for Celtic to replace their Duracell Bunny. Maeda’s never-ending pressing ability truly has made him one of a kind in the Scottish game, as he’s caused all sorts of problems for defences over the past four years with his sheer determination alone. While Rodriguez may not possess the same pace and dynamism of the striker, his prolific numbers alone could help soften the blow if Maeda departs.

Elsewhere at the top end of the pitch, loanees Tomas Cvancara, Junior Adamu and Joel Mvuka are all headed back to their parent clubs, with none able to make their mark since signing in January. Resident super-sub Kelechi Iheanacho was another who had a strong end to the season - another year can be triggered on his short term contract which is set to expire next month, however this decision isn’t likely to be made until Celtic appoint a permanent manager. Callum Osmand and returning Hoops loanee Johnny Kenny are in the squad for next season as it stands.
