Celtic told next manager choice is staring right at them as Donald Trump example deployed in Hoops boss pitch
Celtic’s next manager race is down to two candidates.
A talkSPORT pundit has used ageing US presidents as a way to show why Celtic should appoint Martin O’Neill as manager.
Martin O’Neill and Robbie Keane are believed to be the two remaining contenders for who will lead the Hoops into next season. The former returned to the dugout he occupied between 2000-2005 to secure a Premiership and Scottish Cup double but whether he wants more time in charge aged 74 remains to be seen.
Donald Trump is president of the USA at 79 and while Joe Biden was 82 when he left office. Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has used them as examples on his mid-morning show with Jim White to show why age should not matter as all that matters at Celtic is winning.
Should Martin O’Neill be appointed Celtic manager?
Jordan said: “Martin should be getting the job. Martin should not be talking himself down in any shape or form, but I suspect that's a football manager saying, I want to be told how much I'm loved. I want to be given all the appreciation that I should be given. He is perfectly capable of managing Celtic for another couple of years. He's got bags of energy. We see him in the studio. He's a livewire.
“He may well be tired, but we all get tired at moments in time. The only way Martin shouldn't get this job is if he doesn't want it. He's gone in there, he's fixed the problem, he's very reliable. He's very good at what he does. He galvanises the support base and more importantly than all that, he wins. Winning. Win. Win. What difference does it make what age you are? Win.
“Celtic's job and DNA and what it says on the can is to win. So if the best version of winning in the here and now is Martin O'Neill, then you employ Martin O'Neill, and in two years time you deal with the next version. what's so ambitious about Robbie Keane? I like Robbie and liked him as a player. Think he's grown up as a person, spent some time in Qatar with him., think his management career has gone relatively well but you've got a winner in there.
What type of manager will Celtic get?
“Unless you really believe that Robbie Keane is going to be a nail on victory for you, what is ambitious about giving it to Robbie Keane, because he's younger? So on that basis, why don't we employ politicians that are much younger as prime ministers and presidents of America? It's not about age. It's about whether you can do the job and whether you're experienced enough. The here and now is what you're manage in.
“I’d give him a rolling year. Why not? And look around, you're a big football club. There'll be plenty of managers within a certain range that want to manage Celtic. You're not going to get Jose Mourinho managing Celtic, are you? You're not going to get Pep Guardiola managing Celtic. There's a certain manager with a certain amount of economics attached to it that's going to manage Celtic. So you're not going to Harrods, but you're also not going to Lidl, you're somewhere in between. The question for Martin is, does he believe he can get the right support from the Celtic board.”
