Celtic transfer for £8.5m World Cup star thrown into fresh doubt as decisive factor threatens to derail deal

Czech club are seeking a total package worth approximately £8.5 million for the playmaker.

Celtic’s hopes of signing Bosnian World Cup star Ermin Mahmic have been thrown into doubt following the club’s shock Champions League exit at the hands of LASK Linz.

The Hoops had been negotiating with Slovan Liberec over a deal worth an initial £7million for the highly-rated 21-year-old, with the Czech club also set to benefit from a further seven-figure sum through potential add-ons.

However, Bosnian outlet Oslobodjenje reports that Celtic’s chances of completing the transfer have taken a significant hit, with the Parkhead side now viewed as “a rather unrealistic” destination for Mahmic after missing out on the financial rewards of Europe’s elite competition.

Liberec are understood to be seeking a total package worth approximately £8.5million for the playmaker. While the deal has not been ruled out completely, its current status is described as “uncertain”, with Celtic now having to weigh up whether they are prepared to meet the asking price.

According to the Daily Record, Mahmic’s potential move could also depend on the future of Reo Hatate, with the Japan international’s situation potentially influencing the Scottish champions’ decision-making in the summer market.

Mahmic’s father claims there has also been interest from Besiktas, RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, with the player left out of Liberec’s recent matchday squads as discussions over his future continue. He was absent again for their 1-0 win at Zlín on August 22.

What areas Ermin Mahmic still needs to improve

Mahmic’s game isn't without weaknesses. Data provided by Scouting Stats suggest ball retention and defensive contribution are areas where he can improve.

In simple terms, Mahmić looks more like a direct, goal-threatening No.10 than a deep-lying creator. His ability to score, create and operate in several attacking positions is what makes him an attractive prospect, while his consistency and ability to cope with stronger opposition are the obvious questions if he makes a major step up.

Importantly, he is still only 21, so Celtic would be buying potential as well as his impressive recent output.
