Peter Schmeichel hopes to be in the Celtic away end at an upcoming Champions League match - as one of his ex-clubs pale in comparison to the Hoops.

Brendan Rodgers’ side enjoyed an electric start to their revamped league phase section in the Champions League on Wednesday. They thumped Slovan Bratislava 5-1 with a tough trip away to Borussia Dortmund up next.

Premier League icon and five-time winner Schmeichel, who counts Man Utd, Aston Villa and Man City amongst his ex-clubs, has been a Celtic spectator this term with son Kasper between the sticks. He was working at Man City’s dull 0-0 draw with Inter Milan for CBS and was left yearning for Celtic, who he’ll get the chance to be with in Germany.

He said: “I spent a lot of time during the first half trying to connect to something that would make me watch that (Celtic) game as well. The wifi isn’t great so I was reading on live commentary throughout the game. I’ve been dying to see the highlights.

“I’ve been watching every Celtic game apart from this one. They’ve got some really good players. They’ve got a lot of pace up front and three Japanese players who are fantastic and (Nicolas) Kuhn on the right hand side. The pace they have is incredible and the test is ‘can they transfer their form in the Scottish league into Champions League?’

“Slovan Bratislava isn’t the strongest team but 5-1 is a great result. Next time it’s Dortmund and I’m going to be there. I’ve just got permission to be, not at the Yellow Wall, but in the Green Wall, and I can’t wait.”

The Celtic vibes totally trump what Schmeichel experienced at The Etihad. He added: “The Etihad was absolutely dead. The only people we could hear were the Inter supporters who were quite good. But there was no atmosphere in the Etihad today.

“Normally you would think a big European night but it didn’t happen for them. I don’t think it’s a good draw and I felt it was a really, really boring game. I’m sorry to say it. I felt Inter did a good job in stopping Manchester City. I love good football and I like excitement from the crowd and it was dead.”
