Kyogo makes 18-word statement after responding to Celtic transfer talk with major Birmingham City moment
The former Celtic player has been linked with an exit from Birmingham City this transfer window.
Kyogo Furuhashi has made an 18-word statement after talk of a Celtic return this week was followed by a Birmingham City moment to savour.
The striker left Celtic in January 2025 after a goal-laden spell in Hoops, but moved to Birmingham City last summer on a permanent basis, after his spell at Rennes in France went awry. It’s not gone much better for the Japanese international at the Blues and he is yet to score a goal at Championship level for boss Chris Davies, who was formerly an assistant coach at Celtic in Brendan Rodgers’ first managerial stint in Glasgow.
That talk had some doubt poured on it by Hoops boss Martin O’Neill prior to his side defeating Dundee United 4-0 in the Premiership, but as they downed the Tangerines, Kyogo netted an important goal for his current side in a 3-2 FA Cup win over Cambridge United.
Kyogo response to Birmingham City goal amid Celtic transfer talk
The former Celtic striker netted the second of the three goals before half-time, pouncing on a lapse in concentration at the back before firing low into the bottom corner, and he aired a statement after that he’s keen to try and help Birmingham City in their endeavours for the second half of this season. Kyogo said in a social media address: “Hi Blues fans. I’m glad that I scored. I’ll keep trying to help the team. Keep right on.”
Boss Davies said after the goal and the win for Birmingham City: “He was really good tonight. The second goal is all about Kyogo. He made it for himself by chasing a lost cause, nicked it, and then a big touch out of his feet and takes his goal well.
“You can see the reaction from all the players, himself, the fans, the staff, everyone. Everyone is chuffed for him, and it meant a lot to him. For Kyogo, it’s goals and confidence. He will take a lot from that goal. He’s got a lot of backing. The fans have been great with him. He works hard, he’s quick, he always gets a chance. We have just got to hope now that he takes those more consistently. He has our full support to do it.”
Will Celtic sign Kyogo from Birmingham City
Speaking on Celtic chances of signing Kyogo, O’Neill said before the weekend: “I would have said that would probably be unlikely. I think there is a viewpoint that he wants to really prove himself at Birmingham, which is no surprise.
“Doing plenty of work on it, seriously and I know that’s a big generalisation. We are doing that and hopefully try and get a few players in. But there’s a lot of work going on at the moment. We are well aware that we have to supplement the squad.”
The Hoops bounced back from the Wilfried Nancy era with goals from Yang, Arne Engels, Benjamin Nygren and Daizen Maeda in their rout against Dundee United. Next up is a clash with Falkirk.
