'Not a fluke' - Celtic hero singles out Scotland star for praise after key Switzerland draw

One Scotland star has received special praise after Wednesday night’s Euro 2024 draw with Switzerland.

Celtic favourite Joe Hart has been speaking about Angus Gunn’s impressive performance during Scotland’s big draw with Switzerland at Euro 2024. The Tartan Army drew 1-1 on Wednesday night to keep their hopes of progressing out of the group stage alive.

Steve Clarke’s men took the lead thanks to a Fabian Schar own goal, but Xherdan Shaquiri’s top-corner finish meant they had to settle for a draw. A win against Hungary in the group finale will be required for Scotland to progress, but they do have the comfort of knowing that three points will almost certainly see them progress to the Round of 16, whether it’s in second place or as a best third place team.

Scotland and Switzerland both had chances to win the game on Wednesday night, and Gunn was pivotal in keeping the scoresheet level. In fact, his performance attracted praise from departing Celtic favourite Hart.

“A huge moment in the game,” Hart said on the BBC’s coverage. “He stood big and made the forward shoot, and got a trailing hand to it. Angus probably thought he was going to sidefoot it to his left, but you can’t put all your eggs in one basket. When the ball is hit so fast it just needs a little touch.

“There is so much going on when you talk about the science of goalkeeping. That is not a fluke. You want to cover as much of the goal for as long as possible. He will have got up and immediately thought to himself, ‘That was a huge moment and I am feeling good about that because I work hard every day to execute that moment for my team’.

“I was flying during the first game (5-1 defeat to Germany) and when I landed on Friday I have people coming up to me asking, ‘Had I seen this goal?’ or ‘Had I seen that goal?’ and when I watched it back it was a tough game for Angus. Not an easy one for Angus at all and he played his part in a difficult loss but I thought he was exceptional in this game.

“He made some good decisions. I love to talk about general play - saves happen because that is what you train for every day - but you could see in the general play the team really trust him. He also made a big save in the first half when he gets a strong hand to a shot. It might not look a really good save but everything is in the forward’s favour in that situation.”
