Rangers and Celtic turn transfer rivals over 'absolutely flying' star as duo makes 'enquiries' over ace

Cardiff City are another side alongside Rangers and Celtic who are said to hold transfer interest in the star.

Rangers and Celtic are set to turn rivals over a midfielder currently plying his trade at another Premiership club, it’s claimed.

Motherwell have enjoyed a stunning season that’s clinched European football but the consequence of that is firm interest in key assets. Manager Jens Berthel Askou’s eye-catching attacking style has attracted Toulouse interest and he’s now been named boss of the Ligue 1 side. Players could head for the exit too and Elliot Watt has emerged on Rangers and Celtic radars, as per the Scottish Sun.

Watt was pivotal in a number six position under Askou and his first term at Fir Park had him named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. Alongside English Championship side Cardiff City, Rangers and Celtic are now claimed to be keen, with £3m where the bidding is set at.

Who could Rangers and Celtic sign this summer?

It’s stated: “Motherwell have set the bidding at £3million as interest in Elliott Watt intensifies. SunSport understands Rangers, Celtic and Cardiff City have all made enquiries about the midfielder. We revealed in January Gers boss Danny Rohl is a big admirer of the 26-year-old who is under contract until 2027, with Well retaining the option of a further year.

“Since then, Celtic have also shown an interest in Watt, with Cardiff now joining the race for his signature. The Steelmen are under no pressure to sell, but could cash in on a player who has rejuvenated his career under Jens Berthel Askou this season.”

Speaking before heading for France, Askou reckoned Watt’s form made him a wildcard contender for Scotland selection, ahead of this summer’s World Cup. He said: ”I'm just guessing here because I've had no contact.

Could Elliot Watt play for Scotland?

“I don't like trying to influence or tell other coaches who they need to pick, that's their job. I think he's done enough to be on the radar and I think the staff for the national team, they're well aware of him and his qualities as they are about everyone else, especially in the Scottish Premiership, but also who's Scottish.

“So I would be surprised if they are not looking at him still and saying, look, if someone is not ready, then at least there's a good player there we can bring. He can play football, he's shown at a very high level and he is absolutely flying, and he's just getting better and better every week. Personally, I would want him to keep going over the summer so he's even better when he comes back from holiday, but we'll see.

"It's been a phenomenal development, especially in an age where you sometimes think, well, do they take these steps at 25, is it too late? I actually like working with these 24, 25, something like 23, 24, 25-year-olds, because they're at a stage where it's now or never. They've accumulated some experience, they've learned some harsh lessons, some of them.”
