Serie A midfielder undergoing Celtic medical as Hoops agree loan with buy option for 24y/o Danish talent

Celtic close in on latest signing who brings Italian top-flight experience, versatility and significant room to develop

Celtic are closing in on the signing of Parma midfielder Oliver Sørensen, with the Danish Under-21 international undergoing a medical in Glasgow this afternoon.

The Hoops have reached an agreement with the Serie A club over a season-long loan for the 24-year-old, with the deal understood to include an option to make the move permanent next summer. Multiple reports in Denmark indicate that Sørensen is now completing the final stages of the transfer, with a formal announcement expected once the necessary paperwork has been completed.

The move would represent another addition to a Celtic midfield that has undergone significant change during the summer. The Scottish champions have lost important options in the centre of the pitch, including Arne Engels to West Ham United, and veteran boss Martin O’Neill has been eager to add more depth and physicality ahead of a demanding season.

Sørensen fits that profile. Standing around 6ft tall, he is capable of playing as a central or box-to-box midfielder and arrives with valuable experience of top-level football in Italy. He made 34 Serie A appearances for Parma last term after moving from Danish side FC Midtjylland.

That experience could prove particularly valuable for Celtic. Although the club's immediate European ambitions were dealt a major blow by their Champions League exit against LASK Linz, they still have domestic silverware to defend and a Europa League campaign ahead. O’Neill therefore needs a squad capable of handling a busy fixture schedule while maintaining Celtic's challenge at the top of Scottish football.

Sørensen's arrival would also provide competition for places in a key area of the pitch. Celtic have several established options, but the departure of several players has highlighted the need for greater numbers. The Dane's ability to contribute defensively while also offering an attacking threat could give O’Neill another tactical option.

His recent spell in Serie A should also help him adapt to the demands of playing for a club with major European ambitions. Sørensen only joined Parma last summer, but his regular involvement in Italy's top league means he has already experienced a level of tactical and physical competition beyond what many players encounter before moving to Scotland.

In addition to Sørensen, Celtic are also exploring other midfield targets. Gvidas Gineitis of Torino has been heavily linked with a move to Glasgow’s east end, while a £3.4m deal has been agreed for PSV Eindhoven youngster Joel van den Berg.

The reported loan structure could make Sørensen an especially attractive proposition. Celtic would have the opportunity to assess the midfielder over an entire campaign before deciding whether to activate the purchase option, which has yet to be confirmed.

If his medical is completed successfully and the paperwork is signed, Celtic will have added a midfielder with Serie A experience, versatility and room to develop. The move could signify an important piece of business for O’Neill as Celtic attempt to strengthen their squad and maintain their domestic dominance.
