Sheffield United star told 'shortcuts' must be avoided amid Rangers and Celtic transfer interest
Chris Wilder issued a warning to his player amid the Old Firm outside noise
Sheffield United star, Tyrese Campbell won’t be treated differently from any other player by manager Chris Wilder during the summer for as long as he’s contracted to the Blades.
The former Stoke City striker has been the subject of transfer interest from Celtic and Rangers, who both continue to monitor his fitness progress amid a fresh injury. Campbell had to undergo what Wilder described as a ‘minor operation’ on a knee issue that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.
Despite Campbell being on the radar of both sides of the Old Firm, Wilder has indicated that he will be part of his pre-season plans during the summer. Never one to mince his words, he also stated that for as long as Campbell is a Sheffield United player, he’ll be part of the demanding preparations for next season along with everyone else. The striker is contracted at Bramall Lane until 2027.
Sheffield United star to Rangers and Celtic addressed
Campbell hasn’t quite his normal heights in the EFL Championship this season, scoring five goals in his 23 appearances so far, however he did manage to reach double figures last year in the second tier. Wilder is hoping beyond the summer, to get Campbell back to his best.
He told the Sheffield Star: “Tyrese [Campbell] had a minor small op. He’s now out for the season. We thought it was best that he got that cleared up and got him ready for a tough pre-season and season 2026/27. He's under contract regardless of those discussions that will be going on and if he's with us, then I will be demanding.
“I won't be asking. There'll be no shortcuts for anybody. But getting Ty back up to the levels in the season that he had last season, will be key. And if I do and we do, then we've got a really good player on our hands. But the future will take care of itself.”
Former Rangers player in Bramall Lane treatment room
Kalvin Phillips, who was once on the radar of Brendan Rodgers during his second Celtic spell, has been another injury worry for Wilder as United try to distance themselves from the relegation dogfight going into the run-in. They currently sit 17th in the Championship table, 11 points clear of safety.
Former Rangers man, Joe Rothwell has also been had a few minor issues in recent weeks but is expected to return for their Good Friday fixture at home to Swansea. Wilder said: “Kalvin [Phillips] is still working his way back. Hopefully we'll get him out and involved before the end of the season. Joe Rothwell is back fit.”
