The fee Celtic need to 'convince' West Brom on selling key ace as Hoops join growing transfer race

The Baggies defender has also attracted interest from the Bundesliga

Celtic have been told the asking price from West Brom for transfer target George Campbell as they join the race for the defender.

The USA international has been a standout at the Hawthorns this season in an otherwise struggling Baggies side. He’s made 38 appearances over the course of the campaign, mostly alongside former Celt Nat Phillips, and has notched four goals in that period. At 24 years of age, he has previous experience playing in the MLS for Atlanta United and CF Montreal. For the latter, he was often a backup at fullback for current Hoops star Alistair Johnston.

A 6’ 2”, right-sided, strong American defender, natural comparisons have been made between Campbell and Hoops centre back Cameron Carter-Vickers, who’s missed the majority of this season through an achilles tendon issue. Fellow Stateside stopper, Auston Trusty is also a current representative of both Celtic and the USA. With Bundesliga and fellow EFL Championship clubs also interested in Campbell, the Hoops have been told by West Brom how much they’ll need to fork out for his services.

Celts told asking price for Campbell

According to Celts Are Here: “CeltsAreHere understands that Celtic have held discussions over the possibility of moving for the right-sided centre-half; a position the Hoops have been desperate to fill on a permanent basis since Cameron Carter-Vickers picked up an injury. It is also understood the fee involved would be around £2.5million to convince WBA to part with their player who still has three years left on his current contract at the Hawthorns.”

Campbell, who made his first and only appearance for his country in 2025, is now eyeing a World Cup place in front of a home crowd. His recent performances have done no harm to his chances, as he was nominated for the Championship’s Player of the Month award in April. Having only signed for West Brom in July, his current deal keeps him at the club until 2029.

Celtic interest teases summer plans

Campbell isn’t the only central defender Celtic have expressed an interest in prior to the window as they already look to have one eye on next season. Reportedly, the Hoops are also monitoring Sandefjord centre back Zinedin Smajlovic as well as Cracovia stopper Oscar Wojcik. The club will also have to make a decision on loanees Stephen Welsh and Maik Nawrocki, who are both enjoying successful spells at Motherwell and Hannover 96 respectively and could go back to being in selection contention when they return.

The lack of depth in defence has been an area of concern for Celtic as mainstay Carter-Vickers has been out for so long. In turn, Trusty and Liam Scales have often been deployed at the back, alongside Brentford loanee Benjamin Arthur, who will return to his parent club at the end of the season. Academy product Dane Murray has filled in on occasions but has lost his way in the starting XI in recent weeks.
