Ange Postecoglou made history by becoming the most successful new manager ever in the Premier League as Tottenham Hotspur returned to the top of the table on Monday night. The former Celtic boss set a new record of 23 points gained by a manager in their first nine Premier League matches - winning seven and drawing two - after goals in each half from Son Heung-min and James Maddison secured a 2-0 win over London rivals Fulham.

Postecoglou leapfrogged the previous best of 22 held jointly by Guus Hiddink and Mike Walker, in the process, and has left Spurs fans dreaming of potentially winning only their third league title. Tottenham currently sit two points clear of reigning champions Manchester City - and Hoops icon Chris Sutton couldn’t resist a witty remark on social media as he gave a cheeky nod to the Australian’s successful two-year spell in Glasgow’s East End.

He wrote on Twitter: “Big Ange back on top. Incredible impact he has made at Tottenham.”

Postecoglou won five trophies during his time in Scotland, including two league titles and earning plaudits for adopting an exciting attacking style of football. He was the mastermind behind unearthing Japanese stars such as Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate, while Felipe Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers have also made huge impacts.

Acknowledging the achievement, one impressed Hoops fan joked: “I guess he’s just lucky everywhere he goes,” while a second commented: “And people said he wouldn’t handle the step up to a big club.”
