Cinema Cup classic sees Minerva in thrilling form

THE Minerva players got over the disappointment of a heavy defeat last Saturday with a stunning quarter-final performance.

Despite playing in Bishopbriggs on a Wednesday night, heavy rain and strong winds, the Lennoxtown lads turned in one of their best performances of the season against a formidable Bannockburn side.

Minerva got off to the best possible start when, with only four minutes on the clock, centre forward McKie went on what only could be described as a mazy run – going past four opponents before slipping the ball past the Bannockburn keeper.

This early goal settled Minerva and they went on to create more chances with both Kemmitt and C. Duff coming close.

The Campsie side managed to hold this lead until the 26th minute when they allowed Bannockburn to score.

The match was very competitive, with both sides playing good football despite atrocious conditions. Minerva got their noses in front two minutes before the break when McKie was on target again – lobbing the keeper from 15 yards.

Minerva started the brighter of the two sides in the second half and increased their lead with only two minutes played when midfielder J. Duff coolly finished off a good move – stroking the ball home from eight yards.

With 56 minutes played McKie notched his hat-trick – curling the ball home from close range.

Credit to Bannockburn – they continued to press and were awarded a penalty when their centre forward was upended in the box. Cue Tait in the Minerva goal, who produced a fabulous save.

Bannockburn kept Minerva under pressure and were rewarded for their efforts when their number six curled a great free-kick past the helpless Tait in the 76th minute.

Minerva showed good character and slowly got themselves back into the game. They were rewarded when McLaughlin showed good determination under pressure to slip the ball home to get Minerva’s fifth and last goal of the game.

It was an excellent performance by the Minerva players who eagerly await the identity of their semi-final opponents.
