Clyde and Stranraer share the points in Boxing Day clash

CLYDE sharpshooter John Neill’s fifth goal of the season earned The Bully Wee a point against title-chasing Stranraer on Monday afternoon, in a match played in very windy conditions at Broadwood.

John Sweeney returned to the starting line-up for Clyde, replacing Michael Oliver, who dropped down to the bench.

Clyde went up against a strong wind in the first half and the visitors were quick to take advantage of the conditions with a goal after 18 minutes. Martin Grehan rose well to meet a corner and head the ball into the net.

However, Clyde fought back well and scored a good equaliser ten minutes later. Good work by Sweeney on the right wing led to Neill having an easy task from inside the six yard box and he made no mistake.

The Blues weren’t able to use the weather to regain the lead before half-time but, as the roles reversed after the break, the match continued to be a close contest.

Jordan White came close to scoring early in the second half, but Stranraer stopper Ryan Marshall pulled off a fine stop from close range.

At the other end, Sean Winter should have scored for Stranraer but he blasted his shot over the bar from inside the box, before another effort flashed passed the post with David Crawford scrambling.

John Sweeney forced Marshall into action two more times before the end of the match, first from a free-kick from 25 yards, before one of his corners almost went straight into the roof net.

Jim Duffy’s men now look forward to welcoming fourth-placed Queen’s Park to Broadwood on Monday (January 2), in a league match with a 3pm kick-off.

And on Saturday, January 7, the Bully Wee are away to Annan Athletic, again with a 3pm start.
