Cold comfort for Rossvale as boss calls for summer football

It looked as if the fourth round tie with Stonehaven was going to be one of the few matches to go on and attract a bumper crowd as a result.

But with less than a couple of hours to kick off the snow came down and covered the pitch, forcing the game to be cancelled and rearranged for this Saturday.

Frustrated ‘Vale boss Martin Lauchlan said: “I couldn’t believe it.

“I went up to the park earlier and Petershill were training on it and it was fine.

“But then I got a call from my assistant to tell me it was snowing in Cardonald and once it started here it didn’t stop.

“It cost the club about £400 to put the game off, not to mention missing on what would have been a bumper crowd because all the other games were off.

“You’re not even allowed to brush the park in case you damage the surface so there was nothing we could do.

“You feel for Stonehaven as well. They were only about 10 miles away when the game was called off.

They are desperate to play and so are we so we go again this week and at least the forecast is a bit better.

“But we shouldn’t be going through this. It’s just nuts.

“We should be playing in the summer.

“I played with Finn Harps in Ireland and we played from February to October and didn’t have these kinds of problems.

“We should pilot summer football with the juniors.

“We wouldn’t have games called off and you would get bigger crowds because fans of senior clubs would go along to see a game.”
