Colts are up for the cup

The Lowland League new boys’ first round tie - originally scheduled for Saturday - has been switched to Sunday because of a clash with Clyde’s League 2 home match against Berwick Rangers.

Colts go into the tie with the students, who play in the Caledonian Amateur League along with Colts’ own amateur side, on the back of a solid start to their debut season which has yielded four wins, four defeats and two draws from their opening 10 games.

In their latest outing, against Edinburgh University at Broadwood last Saturday, they battled back from 2-0 down to salvage a point.

Co-manager Craig McKinlay said: “We actually started the game pretty well and were quite sharp but unfortunately the two times they got into our final third we gifted them two goals which had us up against it.

“In the second half we were much better. We made a couple of changes and got two goals and their goalkeeper made a very good save to keep it at 2-2.

“It’s not what we wanted at the start but given the circumstances and the way we recovered we’ve got to be satisfied with a point.

“But now we can focus on the Scottish Cup. It’s a special occasion for everyone involved with the club and with there not being any other games on Sunday it would be great if we could get a big crowd along.

“At the moment I don’t know too much about our opponents, and it’s always difficult to compare different leagues, but the Caledonian League has been in place for a period of time and is regarded as a strong league so they will be a well organised side.

“However it’s a cup tie so comparing the different leagues won’t be a major factor.

“The players are up for it and playing in the Scottish Cup was always one of the big attractions of playing in this league.

“It’s a big day but the best way to enjoy it would be to win and make sure we have another cup tie to look forward to.”
