David Goodwillie ends barren run for Clyde with treble to see off Montrose

Clyde fans don’t normally have to wait until late November for talisman David Goodwillie to open his league scoring account for the season.

Yet the Bully Wee skipper went into Saturday’s home game with Montrose without a league goal in an admittedly late starting campaign.

Goodwillie had gone six matches without scoring, last finding the net in the Betfred Cup at Falkirk on October 13.

But fast forward 90 minutes and Goodwillie had ended his drought in spectacular style with a hat-trick in Clyde’s 3-2 win.

Montrose twice fought back to level after going behind, but had no answer at the third time of asking as Clyde also ended a run of five consecutive defeats, the joint worst losing streak in Danny Lennon’s three years at Broadwood.

The Bully Wee boss was delighted with the result and performance - and says the aim now is to use that as a platform in the weeks ahead.

He said: “I thought we were very good. We had a game plan and that game plan started very well.

“We looked to hit them on the break and that’s where the first goal came from.

“But as the game started to develop you could see them coming more into it and we felt we had to get higher pressure on the ball, get themselves back into the game.

“One of the big things I take out of the game was the fact that each time we’ve gone into the lead and they’ve come back it’s quite easy to go and be despondent.

“But each time we gave ourselves a lift and I thought we thoroughly deserved our three points.

“We now loook to go and build upon that and continue to work on the things that we know we need to improve on.

“That’s what we’ll do. Even on the back of victory we’ll go and pick holes in it, look at things we did well and things we didn’t do so well.”

Next up for Clyde this Saturday is a trip to Methil to play second bottom East Fife, whom Clyde moved above after Saturday’s win.
