I'm a Dutch icon and serial trophy winner - I would've considered Celtic or Rangers transfer on one condition
Capped 134 times for the Netherlands, Wesley Sneijder enjoyed a glittering career that saw him turn out for several European giants
Dutch footballing icon Wesley Sneijder has made a shock declaration by admitting he would have “considered” a move to Celtic or Rangers during his glittering career, provided both clubs played each other “eighteen times a season!”
The 134-capped Netherlands midfielder won the Champions League under Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan and also played for European giants Ajax, Real Madrid and Galatasaray.
Sneijder, 41 has since revealed that joining one of Glasgow’s ‘big two’ was never something he seriously considered, but confessed he still keeps a close eye on Scottish football's biggest fixture and likes to tune in to derbies when he gets the chance.
Asked if he every thought about playing for either side of the Old Firm, Sneijder told AdventureGamers.com: “Never, but if they’d let me play Celtic vs Rangers eighteen times in a season like they do, then I would have considered it!
“It was never a goal I set myself to play in Scotland, but I love to watch the Old Firm games. Celtic vs Rangers, for me, was always special with all the Dutch players over there.
“Michael Mols, Ronald de Boer and Arthur Numan, they all did a great job there, but I never considered it.”
Wesley Sneijder was once considered of the best midfielders in world football
Sneijder enjoyed a storied career, which began in 1990 with his local boys club and stretched almost 30 years. He retired after a year-long stint in Qatar with Al-Gharafa in 2019.
At his peak, Sneijder was widely considered to be one of the best midfielders in the world. After making his international debut in 2003, he accumulated 134 appearances, scoring 31 times for his country.
