Glasgow City edge past Peamount on penalties in women's Champions League

Scotland keeper Lee Alexander was the star of the show as Glasgow city edged over their first UEFA Women's Champions League hurdle of the season at Broadwood.

Playing their first Euro match at their new Cumbernauld base, the Scottish champions were taken all the way by Irish side Peamount United in their first qualifying round encounter.

After a first half of few chances City stepped up the pressure after the break but were unable to find a way past the resolute Peamount defence, either in normal time or in extra-time.

After a goalless 120 minutes it was time for penalties and Alexander's save from

McCarton forced another save from Alexander at the star of extra time with a dink from range before Colvill, Fulton, Wyne and Howat had chances for the hosts but couldn’t find the net.

And so it was penalties and Alexander's save from Aine O’Gorman gave Jo Love the chance to win the tie, only for Irish keeper Niamh Reid-Burke to save her spot-kick.

But Alexander then pulled off another save from Lauryn O’Callaghan and that was enough to put City through.

Alexander told BBC Alba afterwards: "Peamount made it really difficult for us. Their keeper played really well.

"When it comes to penalties, it's really just your luck. For me, it's my job to keep them out."

City are back in SWPL action on Sunday when face Motherwell at the Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie.

The defending champions top the table after winning their opening two matches.
