Christian Mbulu: £16,000 already raised for bereaved family of tragic ex-Motherwell ace
Mbulu (23), who had spent the 2018-19 campaign at Fir Park after being freed by Millwall, was found dead in his home last Tuesday night.
News of the death of the centre back – who latterly played for Morecambe – shocked the football community, with kind hearted Motherwell stars backing a GoFundMe campaign which initially targeted raising £20,000 for the player’s family.
Current midfield ace David Turnbull and ex-skipper Carl McHugh are two who have supported the initiative.
Mbulu’s agent Dominic Yarwood, who set up the fund said: “He was a son, a brother, a father, a cousin, a nephew and of course a great friend to so many, as well as a talented professional footballer whose clubs included Millwall, Motherwell, Crewe and Morecambe to name but a few.
“Anyone who had the pleasure of crossing paths with Christian will remember him as a genuine, humble, pure-hearted soul, who would do anything for anyone, and with a smile that could light up any room.
“Christian will never be forgotten and he will forever live on in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him.
“All funds raised will be given to his family to support them in what is an incredibly difficult time.”
In October 2018, Mbulu was named as Player of the Round for the third round of the Scottish Challenge Cup after scoring to help Motherwell’s under-21 side to a 2–0 home win against League of Ireland club Sligo Rovers.
The central defender was released by ‘Well in summer 2019 and joined Crewe Alexandra until January 2020 before joining Morecambe on a deal until the end of the season.
